Pandemic Expansions

Expansions

Pandemic has 3 expansions.  Here’s the lowdown and which are must buys and ones that you can do without.

On theBrink  – This is a must buy expansion as it adds so much to the base game.  Most of which makes the game harder to beat.

Mutants – Mutants are a 5th disease but are even more deadly as there are half as many of them and will end the game in defeat if they all come on the board. They are also driven by some extra cards that you put in the packs.

Virulant strain –  When the first pandemic card appears the disease with the most cubes on the borad becomes the virulent strain and is more deadly as thet expansion replaces the pandemic cards from the original game with new ones that add a new power to the virulent strain diseaseas every pandemic card is drawn.

Adding both the mutant and virulent strain challenges to the base game creates an advanced game which can be really hard to beat.

Bio terrorist – To be honest we thought this as a miss and basically ignored it as it broke the game by turning one player into a bio terrist who wanted the diseases to win.  Sorry Matt, this wasn’t for us!

Pandemic: On the Brink also includes new event cards, new role cards and rules for five players

In Pandemic: In the Lab,

the second expansion for Pandemic, you will use a new game board that allows you to move the pawns in a laboratory. The goal of this activity is the same as in the base game – finding cures for diseases – but this time in a new way. Behind sealed bio-hazard doors, scientists race against time to sequence diseases, take samples, and test cures.

Pandemic: In the Lab includes four new roles, new Virulent Strain events, and a Worldwide Panic Mutation scenario. Players can compete individually or on rival teams (when playing with four or six players). Can your team work together in the lab to save humanity?

To be honest, we weren’t too impressed with this expansion.  As Anne would say, finding a cure is hard enough why make it more complicated?

State of Emergency

Your job of curing deadly diseases is about to get more difficult. State of Emergency, the third expansion for the hit cooperative game Pandemic, introduces three modules that provide unique ways to play and give you greater control over each game’s difficulty. Take on one of five new roles as you tackle the Hinterlands Challenge and investigate disease strains that jump from animals to humans. Travel to four locations spread across two new boards as you trace diseases to their source. If you don’t act quickly, they’ll soon spread to nearby cities and become even harder to contain. The Superbug Challenge raises the stakes even further by introducing a fifth disease that cannot be treated. Instead, players must collaborate to produce vaccine doses and eradicate the superbug before it’s too late.

New Challenges, New Tools

With State of Emergency, you can fine-tune the difficulty of your Pandemic games even further. Take greater control over the diseases, or make things more unpredictable. If diseases overwhelm you too often, use quarantine markers to slow down how quickly they spread. Use an action to impose a quarantine on a city and prevent the next two attempts to place disease cubes or perform an outbreak. If you want to inject increased difficulty into your games, the Emergency Event Challenge is for you. This peppers the player deck with Emergency Event cards that have nasty, unpredictable effects such as restricting players’ movement or reducing their maximum hand size. Only the most seasoned players can overcome this challenge!

While I qould put On The Brink as the must-have expansion, this is a close second but only take it on when you’re ready too.
